Haha! I bred two broken opal mini rex (one over-marked, and one lightly marked), expecting 50% brokens, 25% charlies, and 25% solid. All opals. Well, I got the patterns down to the "T", but the color... Hmmm...
At birth, they all looked like opals. The solid was a peanut, and didn't survive. The three brokens (including the charlie in that term) are NOT all opals; two are missing the fawn coloration in their ears. UGH! It looks like I have some blue chins. Luckily, knowledge of genetics has enabled me to trace the culprit in matter. Even though neither parent's pedigree shows any kind of chinchilla, I can still figure out who donated the gene: it was dear old dad. Mom couldn't contribute it, as she has the REW gene from her REW papa. Anone want a lightly marked opal buck that carries chinchilla? He's going up for sale! Oh, I'll have some pet bunnies to sell in August, too. On the bright side, this caused me to take a closer look at the dam's pedigree, so now I know she carries that REW gene. She can be helpful in determining what some of my bucks may be hiding! -------------------- Country Gardens Rabbitry
